In short

Acne happens when hair follicles get blocked with oil and dead skin cells, which leads to blackheads, whiteheads, red bumps and sometimes deep painful lumps. It is most common in teenagers but often continues into adult life, especially in women. On Indian skin, acne frequently leaves dark marks that can last longer than the pimples themselves, so early treatment matters.

Typical signs

  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Red bumps and pus-filled pimples
  • Deep, painful lumps or cysts
  • Dark marks or scars after pimples heal
  • Breakouts on the face, chest, back or shoulders

When to see a dermatologist

  • Over-the-counter products have not helped after 8 to 12 weeks
  • You have deep, painful lumps or cysts
  • Acne is leaving scars or dark marks
  • Acne started suddenly in adult life or comes with irregular periods or excess facial hair
  • Acne is affecting your confidence or mood

Signs vary from person to person and several skin conditions look alike. Only an examination can confirm a diagnosis.
