Stretch marks

Also known as Striae, Striae distensae, Striae gravidarum.

In short

Stretch marks are lines that form when the deeper layer of the skin is stretched quickly, such as in pregnancy, growth spurts, weight gain or bodybuilding. New marks are often pink, red or purple, and older ones fade to lighter lines. They are harmless, and while no treatment removes them completely, some treatments can make them less noticeable, especially when they are new.

Typical signs

  • Lines or streaks on the abdomen, breasts, thighs, hips or upper arms
  • Pink, red, purple or dark lines when new
  • Pale, slightly wrinkled lines when old

When to see a dermatologist

  • Stretch marks appear without an obvious reason such as pregnancy or weight change
  • They appear along with weight gain in the face and trunk, easy bruising or muscle weakness
  • You have used steroid creams over large areas
  • You want to discuss procedures to improve their appearance

Signs vary from person to person and several skin conditions look alike. Only an examination can confirm a diagnosis.
