In short

Lichen planus is an immune-related condition that can affect the skin, the inside of the mouth, the scalp, nails and genitals. On skin it causes itchy, flat-topped purple or dark bumps, often on the wrists and ankles, and in the mouth it can cause lacy white patches or sores. A pigmented form that causes dark patches on the face and neck is fairly common in India.

Typical signs

  • Itchy, shiny, flat-topped purple or dark bumps
  • Bumps on the wrists, ankles, shins or lower back
  • Lacy white lines or sore patches inside the cheeks
  • Grey-brown or dark patches on the face and neck
  • Ridged or thinning nails

When to see a dermatologist

  • You have an itchy rash of flat-topped bumps
  • You have white patches or sores in the mouth that do not heal
  • You have patchy hair loss with scarring on the scalp
  • Sores in the mouth or genitals are painful or changing

Signs vary from person to person and several skin conditions look alike. Only an examination can confirm a diagnosis.
