In short

Nail fungus is a slow fungal infection that makes nails thick, discoloured and crumbly, most often on the toenails. It is more common with age, diabetes, sweaty feet and closed footwear. Not every thick or discoloured nail is fungal, so testing before treatment is useful, and treatment takes months because nails grow slowly.

Typical signs

  • A yellow, white or brown nail
  • A thickened nail that is hard to cut
  • Crumbling or splitting at the edge of the nail
  • The nail lifting away from the nail bed

When to see a dermatologist

  • A nail changes colour or thickness, so the cause can be confirmed
  • You have diabetes or poor circulation
  • There is pain, swelling or pus around the nail
  • A dark streak appears in a nail, which should always be checked

Signs vary from person to person and several skin conditions look alike. Only an examination can confirm a diagnosis.
